The term “Autumn” refers to the return to clarity of the phrase “Spring.” In the last movement, we see a hunt, bringing us back to the 14th-century Italian genre of cicha. Singing birds take over the area as soon as a thunder storm strikes, but they gradually lose ground. In Latin, the weather is seen as too hot for any movement, and thus as L’estate or Summer. Ospedale della Piera, a shelter for illegitimate and abandoned girls, is a possible link between the composer’s interest in concertos and the shelter. Concertos are typically composed in three movements: a slow middle movement, followed by a lively first movement and a lively third. The Four Seasons, or Le quattro stagioni in Italian, are a set of four concertos written by Antonio Vivaldi. They were written around 1716–1717 and published in 1725 in Amsterdam, together with eight additional concerti, as Il cimento dell’armonia e dell’inventione.
